#WCW: Melissa Chantel Kalidas. If you ever wondered about the person behind the camera…

Published in Entertainment | Wednesday, 17 February 2016

The PTL #WomanCrush of the Week is Melissa Chantel Kalidas, who's used to being behind the camera, but as her own pics suggest, is just as proficient in front of one.

Tell us about your career.
I'm a Project Coordinator at GroundXero - a production house that deals with media, advertising, photo shoots, TVC's, Graphic Design etc.

My role is to handle and coordinate these shoots:

Cast for models (Take photographs of them, edit the pictures and add them to our advertising data base for our clients for future use). Make Call Sheets for the shoots which include: which Models will be used. model release forms, wardrobe, a make-up artist logistics, timings, what equipment, locations, transport, Set Props, meals etc) so that the shoot can run smoothly, as well as the day to day things like expense sheets and alike.

What's the best part of your job?
Mmm, I'd have to say my team! Haha, they’re pretty awesome, even though they bully me most of the time because majority of the time I'm the only girl there. No but on the real though, I enjoy the “hectiness” at times. It may be stressful, but at the same time it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I feel like I handled the impossible [laughs].

And also, meeting new people, taking pictures and making the simplest ones look amazing with a few editing skills that I developed, haha. Travelling and coordinating shoots from different parts of Lusaka and Africa is just…amazing.

And what’s the most challenging?
I think that would have to be the endless obstacles on a shoot and I have to make a plan at the very last minute and there's no way around it!  [Laughs] You just got to take the situation in...(whooossssaaaa) and handle the damn thing! [Laughs]. And the late night shoots of course that finish in the early AM's and you feel zombified the next day.

What haven’t you done yet that you’d like to do?
Sky-diving! Definitely! It's the one thing I've always wanted to do. Being an adrenaline junky for a day, being daringly crazy and hoping my damn parachute opens! hahaha!

Who have been your inspirations growing up who also inspire you today?
I would have to say my parents. They such hard working individuals and I've always looked up to them and still do.

And then also anybody that has talent and is not afraid to be their own inspiration...I mean I give a lot of props to anything that deserves to be looked at from an inspiring angle. From a good drawing done by a street artist that hasn't been noticed but still does what he does because he’s passionate and it makes him happy at the end of the day, or someone that has a platform to actually show it and is known for it, encouraging others and at the same time still be genuine and humble. I admire that, and can only aspire to be the same and be someone else’s inspiration one day.

What 3 songs are you constantly listening to?
Only 3! haha, I'm obsessed with music and dancing and my sisters are always laughing at me because I'm constantly yelling "That's my jam!" to almost any dope song that comes on! At the moment I can't get enough of “Pillowtalk” by Zayn Malik, “Needed Me” by Miss Ri Ri (Rihanna), and “White Iverson” by Post Malone, that’s a dope song [laughs]. And I just have to throw in an imbasela: “Middle” by DJ Snake featuring Bipolar Sunshine, love it! Ok, Ok, this is the last one I promise: “Roll Up” by Emtee featuring Wizkid and AKA, JAM! Haha.

Describe your “perfect date”.
Wow, [clears throat], ha-ha. Umm, someone that has his smart/casual swag on fleek to start with. Its so attractive when a man looks and smells good; someone who can hold a conversation and not wait for me to talk the entire time. I can be really shy and other times extremely talkative, so it’s nice to have good conversation and laughs. Sense of humor and flirtation is the key I'm telling you! I like it when he can be a gentleman to me but at the same time not be afraid to be a doophus around me because I can be a little crazy myself...just saying .

Name one thing we’d never catch you doing.
Having a drink…at work.

Who’s your celebrity crush?
Bad gal RiRi! I mean who doesn't have a crush on her. I like her style, she looks good in anything! And her "I don't give a f…" attitude? Ha-ha! I’m not the most confident person, so her confidence and sex appeal is something I admire and envy.

How would you describe your style?
I don't have a fixed particular style, but most of the time I'm in a hip hop kind of swag - love sweat pants, caps, hoodies and sneakers, that’s definitely my comfort zone. I do get my days where I dress really feminine – heels, trying to look all fly and ish. So, I'd say my style depends whatever my mood is. Depending on the place or occasion, I'll try and slay it! Ha-ha.

What’s your superpower?
I didn't want to put my secret out there, but...I have X-Ray Vision hahahaha!

Nah, I would say I'm a people's person. I get along with everyone.  I don't think I've ever been on really bad terms with anyone in my life and would like to keep it that way :). I tend to think I might be the female version of Dr. Phil sometimes, listening to issues and trying to give the best advice I can.
